“S.britt tipped me off to this; it’s a shockingly accurate and highly enjoyable fan-created Gremlins sequence designed to replace the scene in Gremlins 2 in which the green guys take over the film medium itself. In the theatrical run of the movie, the critters invaded the projection booth, only to be reprimanded by Hulk Hogan of all people, and in the home video version, they suddenly spliced themselves into a John Wayne movie. Here, French fan Sacha Feiner takes the premise to its logical conclusion: the PVR.

Feiner inserts his puppet creations into a number of popular films, and the results are pretty impressive for a home-grown project. Don’t miss the making-of video, either.”

The fantastic show, “Walking With Dinosaurs: LIVE” is returning to the Northern Kentucky/Southern Ohio area in October! Get tickets now! This show features life-size robotic dinosaurs. Seriously! You read that correctly. Life-sized, robotic dinosaurs! This is such a cool show. I saw this last year and was completely amazed with the technology and the experience. I highly recommend seeing this show. If you have little kids that happen to love dinosaurs, this show will blow their tiny little minds! I’ve been extremely impressed with the graphic and motion design of the Olympic Games. Even the Olympic mascots are rather well designed. Kelly loves them. You can download some nice Fuwa wallpapers on the official Olympic website along with some other beautiful, Chinese designed imagery.

The movie, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” may not be getting the best reviews, but the Happy Meal Toys are pretty darned cool. Thanks for the email, Deann!

This is one of the most amazing applications of software to video technology I have ever seen. I imagine that this software will help revolutionize the movie industry by giving directors greater power over their medium to remove unwanted elements and correct problem areas. Absolutely amazing technology.

An eclectic group of artists and designers have been influential in my creative and professional development. This list includes members of the ILM crew; people I’ve never met but I’ve studied their work for years. My imagination has been sparked, my skill-set challenged and my ambition has been fueled by people such as John Dykstra, Dennis Muren, Phil Tippet, Stan Winston, and the original ILMer, Ralph McQuarrie. Actually, my interest in art and design started with Ralph McQuarrie and the Hildebrandt brothers. Mr. McQuarrie’s realistic approach to fantastic subject matter captured my attention, and I wanted to paint like Ralph. Although my life has taken a different turn and I rarely have an opportunity to paint anymore, much of my original artistic interest and ambition was spurred by McQuarrie’s paintings. The swimming finals are taking place live as I type this, so I can’t spend too much time writing, but I gotta say that the opening ceremonies were absolutely amazing. As a designer it’s incredibly inspiring to see so much good work being done in one venue. Absolutely brilliant. As an aside, I came across this really fantastic game called, “Choke on my Groundhog, YOU BASTARD ROBOTS”. You press the space bar to go back in time. Then you’re fighting along side your previous self until your character is killed. Then your present self is left alone to fight for the future. It’s a great concept with fun game play. Kelly and I went camping last weekend, and during a walk we were looking up at the stars. I casually pointed out the Milky Way, which in the absence of light pollution, is visible as a subtle cloud of stars stretching across the sky. Kelly had never seen it before and didn’t even know it was visible. I was just reading an article about the Milky Way when I came across this interesting paragraph:

In his book “Nightwatch,” the well-known Canadian astronomer Terrence Dickinson comments that in the aftermath of the predawn 1994 Northridge, California earthquake, electrical power was knocked out over a wide area. Tens of thousands of people in southern California rushed out of their homes looked up and perhaps for the first time in their lives saw a dark, starry sky. In the days and weeks that followed, radio stations and observatories in the Los Angeles area received countless numbers of phone calls from concerned people who wondered whether the sudden brightening of the stars and the appearance of an eerie silvery cloud (the Milky Way) might have caused the quake.

“Such reaction,” notes Dickinson, “can come only from people who have never seen the night sky away from city lights.

Do yourself a favor and plan a trip someplace far away from city lights. The winter months are best because low levels of humidity contribute to better stargazing. You’ll be amazed at how beautiful and full the night sky can be. Whenever I look up at the night sky, I often imagine how it was viewed by our ancestors. Before cities, airplanes, satellites, air pollution, and the electric light bulb, a clear night sky fueled imaginations and the curiosity of millions.
